The challenge

MICS wanted to update its website in order to improve the layout and accessibility of its research, education and outreach programs. It was important for MICS to improve their fundraising options in order to fund their research. The website will be enhanced to increase the effectiveness of the revenue generating activities that are presented on the website including ensuring the website is usable on mobile devices. The project was under a tight timeline, to be live in time for the launch of the Royal Ontario Museum's Blue Whale Exhibit, which it was a part of.

The solution

Northern Village first moved the over 500 page, bilingual website to our easily updated website platform, from which we could rearrange the website, so that it was more reflective of the research and activities at MICS. In particular, the website was arranged according to the interest level of the visitor -- Our Whales for the casual visitor, Whale Research for more in-depth information and possibilities of collaboration, News for current activities, and How to Engage for those wanting to participate in Whale Adventures and/or wanting to support the research station. A permanent access to the donation page was added to all pages of the website, which integrates multiple donation choices (e.g. becoming a supporter, adopting a whale, receiving donations and booking ecotourism trips). The implementation made sure the website was accessible in both French and English at all times.
